Data breaches are a major cause of cyber incidents that hugely impact internet users. Getting to know where the data stolen from data breaches end up to, or just figuring out a way to find out if you’re a victim of a data breach, is paramount to ensure your online safety.

In this post, I’ll show you a somehow new data breach look up site, that you can use for your personal side projects, or just to see if you’re a victim of a recent breach.

You might ask yourself what a data breach look up site is. Well,
this is just a website or online service that allows you, the user(s), to check whether your personal information has been involved in any known data breaches. These sites sources leaked information from various sources e.g public databases or data shared by security researchers, and on your request, cross-references it against users’ personal data to determine whether there is a match.

Some Major Causes of Data Breaches “Leaks”

Data breaches can be caused by a variety of factors, including human error, system glitches, malware and cyber attacks. Human error can include things like accidentally sending sensitive information to the wrong recipient or failing to use strong passwords. System glitches can result in unauthorized access to data, while malware can be used to steal information or hold it for ransom. Cyber attacks can be conducted by hackers who exploit vulnerabilities in systems to gain access to sensitive information.

How To Check if You’re a Victim of The Leaked Data

To check if you’re a victim of a data breach, simply go to the site demonstrated in below video(search illicit services), Have I Been Pwned or DeHashed, and you’ll be able to check if your data is publicly accessible.

Things to note: URL on top of every individual group of data, is in the form of an internal DB ID while some of the passwords will be encrypted and others in plain text.

Ways To Protect Yourself From Being a Data Breach Victim

To prevent your private info from being leaked, it is important to take steps to protect your personal data. This will include;

  • Using strong unique passwords for all your accounts.
  • Enabling two-factor authentication.
  • Avoiding public Wi-Fi networks.
  • Keeping your software up to date.
  • Being cautious about sharing personal information online, and using encryption to protect sensitive data.
  • Additionally, organizations can take steps to protect customer data by implementing strong security protocols, training employees on data protection best practices, and conducting regular security audits to identify and address potential vulnerabilities.

Stay safe!
