The Intro: Lessons From My Duolingo Journey
Learning a new language can be a thrilling and rewarding experience. It opens doors to new cultures, enhances communication skills, and broadens our horizons. In my own language-learning journey on Duolingo, I discovered the importance of setting a sustainable pace, focusing on personal progress, and embracing the learning process itself.
The Obsession for Rankings:
During the Covid era(as if it’s a long time ago😂), I embarked on a language-learning adventure with Duolingo, determined to conquer the leaderboard. I became fixated on being ranked among the top three finishers each week. I would repeat the same tests over and over, solely to accumulate points and improve my position. However, my obsession with rankings soon became a hindrance rather than a motivation.
The Pitfall of Competition:
As my fixation on rankings intensified, I found myself sacrificing quality for quantity. Instead of immersing myself in the language, I was more concerned with earning points. My focus shifted from genuine learning to mindless repetition. Consequently, my language skills plateaued, and I lost touch with the joy of acquiring a new language.

The Importance of Personal Pace:
During my hiatus from Duolingo, I realized the value of setting my own pace. Language learning is a personal journey, and progress varies from person to person. Trying to match the pace of others only added unnecessary pressure and hindered my growth. It’s crucial to remember that everyone learns differently, and it’s okay to take the time you need to understand and internalize new concepts.
Embracing Consistency:
Upon my return to Duolingo, I decided to approach language learning with a fresh perspective. Instead of fixating on rankings, I focused on consistency and regular practice. I acknowledged that frequent, dedicated learning sessions were more valuable than sporadic bursts of activity. I set aside a specific time each day, creating a habit that became an integral part of my routine.
Learning from Mistakes:
One of the most significant lessons I learned was the importance of embracing mistakes. Learning a language is a journey filled with trial and error. Rather than being discouraged by errors, I celebrated them as opportunities for growth. I paid attention to my weak areas, reviewed grammar rules, and sought additional resources to complement my Duolingo practice.
The Role of Duolingo:
While Duolingo is an excellent language-learning app, it should be seen as a tool rather than the ultimate measure of language proficiency. It provides a structured curriculum, engaging exercises, and gamification elements that can make learning enjoyable. However, it’s essential to supplement it with real-world language practice, such as conversations, reading, and listening to native speakers.
Conclusion:
In my Duolingo journey, I discovered that learning a language is a personal endeavor that should be cherished and nurtured. It’s about embracing consistency, setting achievable goals, and appreciating the process of acquiring new skills. By focusing on your own progress and treating others’ achievements as inspiration rather than competition, you can cultivate a sustainable language-learning routine that leads to fluency and cultural enrichment.
“Language is not a genetic gift, it is a social gift. Learning a new language is becoming a member of the club — the community of speakers of that language.” — Frank Smith
So, let’s embark on this language-learning adventure with enthusiasm, dedication, and an understanding that the true measure of success lies not in rankings but in the growth and transformation we experience along the way. Καλή μάθηση!
