Word documents often require mathematical equations, be it for a scientific paper or a class assignment. Here’s a quick guide on how you can quickly add & format math equations or formulas in your Word document:

Method 1 of Adding Mathematical Symbols: Through Insert -> Equations

  1. Open your Word document.
  2. Click on the “Insert” tab in the ribbon at the top of the window.
  3. In the “Symbols” group, click on “Equation.”
  4. Choose the type of equation you want to insert from the dropdown menu, such as “New Equation” for a blank equation, “Insert Ink Equation” to write an equation by hand, or “Save Selection to Equation Gallery” to save an equation for later use.
  5. Click on the equation structure you want from the options listed in the dropdown menu. For example, “Linear” or “Radical.”
  6. Start typing your equation. As you type, Word will automatically format the equation for you.

Method 2 of Adding Mathematical Symbols: Alt + = Sign

  1. Open your Word document.
  2. Position your cursor where you want to insert the equation.
  3. Press the “Alt” key and hold it down.
  4. While holding down the “Alt” key, press the “=” key (the equals sign) on your keyboard.
  5. A small equation box will appear where you can type your equation. As you type, Word will automatically format the equation for you.

To further format your equations, you can go back to the “Home” tab, highlight the area you want to format, and either increase the font, or even change the alignment.
